Dear Colleagues,

 

This conference will be held at the time of Poland’s presidency in the European Union and is connected with the activity of the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) organisation.

The Conference offers an ideal opportunity for scholars from the European Union (including Poland), the countries of the South-East Asia as well as other parts of the world to meet and exchange ideas and results of their research on South-East Asia.

Poland has a long-standing tradition of research in Asian studies, including the region of South-East Asia, and of participation in restoration of art monuments there (especially in Cambodia and Vietnam). Some institutions in Poland have been involved in stimulating academic interest in South-East Asian culture and art, such as the Faculty of Oriental Studies of the University of Warsaw, the Institute of Oriental Philology of the Jagiellonian University in Krakow and the Institute of Study and Restoration of Artistic Works of the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun as well as the Asia and Pacific Museum in Warsaw.

Interest in the culture of this region has been growing among art historians, art restorers, museologists, orientalists, ethnologists, theatre, dance, music and film scholars.

 

 

The proposed main thematic domains of the conference are:

  South-East Asian art in multi-religious and multi-ethnic contexts;

 the cultural role played by court and royal patronage of art in South-East Asia;

 local cultures of South-East Asia and their artistic traditions;

  modern and contemporary art of South-East Asia;

  artistic relations between Europe and South-East Asia;

  protection of  the region’s cultural heritage.

 

The area concerned covers Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam, including Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Arabic and European cultural presence in the region.

 

We welcome participants in two categories:

  Speakers who present their papers,

  General audience who participate without presenting a paper.

As a rule, each speaker will be given 30 minutes; the paper (20 min) will be followed by a discussion (10 min). There will be sufficient time for unrestricted discussion and personal contact during the conference as well.

The registration forms (attached below) including short abstracts will be expected by March 31, 2011. They should be sent to: south.east.art@interia.eu or, in case of technical problems: warsaw@sztukaorientu.pl

The organizers plan to publish the contributions in a separate conference volume.

The language of the conference is English.

50 Euro.

The Conference will take place in the medieval city of Krakow, Poland, in the picturesque conference centre of the Manggha Museum of Japanese Art and Technology, in close proximity to the Wawel Royal Castle. Krakow has very good overland and air connections with most cities in Europe and in the world. Alternatively, you can reach Warsaw, Poland, by plane and continue your journey to Krakow by train (3 hours).

The organizers are trying to secure sufficient financial resources to meet the costs of accommodation and board for all the participants presenting their papers. We will inform you about the final results of our efforts in this regard as soon as possible.
